Sabarna Ray Chaudhury family were the Zamindars of kolkata area when the British took the 3 villages Sutanuti, Kalikata and Gobindapur from them as lease and formed Calcutta. They were the Jagirdars of the area which they had got from the Mughals. Learn More about their history here.
In 1610 AD Laksmikanta Roy Choudhury started the first Durga puja in their ancestral home at Barisha. It is possibly the oldest organised festival in the Kolkata region.
Today eight Durga Pujas are held by branches of the family. Out of these, six are at Barisha, the seventh is at Birati while the eighth at Nimta. The Pujas held at Barisha are those of; Aatchala, Baro Bari, Mejo Bari, Benaki Bari, Kalikingkar Bhawan and Majher Bari.
A family organisation named Sabarna Roy Choudhury Paribar Parishad today preserves the history, culture and traditions of this family. Here are some pictures of Durga Puja in recent years.
